For a lot of us “Boomers”, the 1960’s were the years for change and redefining culture in the US. So too, it was for the youths of the UK. “An Education” follows 16-year-old London suburbanite Jenny (Carey Mulligan), a bright young girl on the cusp of her 17th birthday, who is being pushed by her father to get into Oxford University. Jenny is set to honor her father’s wishes and dreams, until she meets a man (Peter Sarsgaard) twice her age. Once she sees the lifestyle David can provide, one she never imagined might so easily be hers, she is hooked and thoughts of Oxford get pushed aside.
It’s a coming of age story for Jenny as she questions the stuffiness of the life she sees around her while getting glimpses of the upscale lifestyle the older man is offering. Just when things are looking pretty good for Jenny with the dashing (yet a little too smooth) David, the truth comes out. Jenny goes from being a bright eyed school girl to a sophisticated young lady and then all the way back to questioning if she really knows who she is at all. It’s the tough choices in life, as Jenny discovers, are the defining moments that puts the direction of life on its path. There’s excellent performances including Alfred Molina as Jenny’s father and a lot of Oscar® ‘buzz’ surrounding this movie! The awards continue to mount; An Education” has won the Audience Choice award and the Cinematography award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Starring Carey Mulligan, Olivia Williams, Alfred Molina, Cara Seymour, William Melling, Matthew Beard, Peter Sarsgaard, and Emma Thompson.
