I’m particularly fond of the Asian style films that present the fables and childhood stories of their culture on the big screen. With the over the top action sequences, the style is a reminder of the fable aspect while the stories are lesson in living.

“Ong Bak 2: The Beginning” is the story of Tien (Tony Jaa) who was born into nobility but had it taken from him after his parents were brutally murdered. Living on the streets, he’s taken in by a motley group of street dwellers; teach him the finer skills of stealing, and, how to fight. During his childhood he learned Khon, a form of dance, which is usually reserved for royalty. Although he didn't know it, Khon would later prove to be an asset.

Tien's expertise as a thief and fighter grows and it isn't long before he is made head thief. As destiny often works, a competition is being held to find the best knights to serve under the very man who had killed Tien's parents all those years ago! Tien passes the tests easily and is made the 2nd Knight. Now, the opportunity for revenge is his and he’ll use all his skill and ingenuity to even the score on the man who killed his parents.

The action is outlandish in almost a dreamlike presentation, and the challenge of star and director Tony Jaa is an admirable accomplishment that keeps one on the edge as the hero who will not stop, until his goal is met.

Starring Tony Jaa, Sorapong Chatree, Sarunyu Wongkrachang, Nirut Sirichanya, Dan Chupong, Santisuk Promsiri, and Primorata Dejudom.

Directed by Tony Jaa & Panna Rittikrai; written by Panna Rittikrai. Rated R for sequences of violence. Magnet Releasing release. Runtime: 98 minutes.
