The year of 1974 became a memorable year for two main reasons. It was the year of the famous “Rumble in the jungle” boxing match in Kinshasa, Zaire between Muhammad Ali, who faced the heavyweight champion George Foreman. That event was presented in the 1996 documentary “When We Were Kings”. The second event was the 12-hour, three nightlong concert in Zaire during the same time frame as the boxing match. The two events were intertwined because of the assistance of boxing promoter Don King.
The filmmakers covered both events with over 125 hours of footage. “Soul Power” is the music festival side of the two events and gives us a look at the planning, logistics, scheduling, stage and venue preparation, right down to the sheer magnitude of pulling together the aspects of a music festival and the “R & B” performers. Once every thing is in place, we see highlights of the acts with the headliner, “The Godfather of Soul”, James Brown. “Soul Power” gives us an opportunity to go back in time for 90 minutes, almost 35 years ago, when “R & B” was medicine for the soul of the world…
Featuring James Brown, Bill Withers, B.B. King, The Spinners, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, Mohammad Ali, Don King, Stewart Levine, and a host of others.
Directed by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte; Sony Pictures Classics release; Runtime: 93 minutes. |
